Assessing the effectiveness of direct injection for ocean carbon sequestration under the influence of climate change

چکیده
[1] This paper studies the effect of climate change on simulated efficiency of carbon injection at different locations and ocean depths using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity, ISAM-2.5D. Following the OCMIP carbon sequestration protocol, we carried out a series of carbon injection simulations. The ISAM results show that warming over the next 500 years under the IPCC S650 and WRE1000 stabilization scenarios could change the ocean circulation and thereby increases the residence time of CO2 disposed into the deep ocean, particularly for Atlantic injection. However, the warming does not have a significant effect on carbon injections into the Pacific and Indian Oceans, where circulation change is small. This new finding contrasts with previous OGCM results. Citation: Jain, A. K., and L. Predicting and evaluating the effectiveness ofocean carbon sequestration by direct injection
Direct injection of CO2 into the ocean is a potentially effective carbon sequestration strategy. Therefore, we want to understand the effectiveness of oceanic injection and develop the appropriate analytic framework to allow us to compare the effectiveness of this strategy with other carbon management options. Here, after a brief review of direct oceanic injection, we estimate the effectiveness...
متن کاملPotential of Carbon Sequestration of Hammada salicornica Vegetation Type in Desert Areas (Case Study: South Khorasan, Iran)
Climate change due to increasing the level of greenhouse gases including CO2 is the main environmental issue of the world in the new century. One of the effective way for reducing atmospheric CO2 is carbon sequestration by plants and soils. A vast area of Iran has desert condition with special adapted plant species in which can be devoted for carbon sequestration. Hammada salicornica as a shrub...
متن کاملGeological Identification and Storage Capacity of Suitable formation for CO2 disposal in Eastern Zagros (Fars area), Iran
Climate change is one of the major global concerns. Emission of anthropogenic greenhouse gases is the main cause of climate change. One way of reducing the emissions is the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in geological formations. In this study, feasibility of CCS was studied in an Iranian gas production area located in the northern Persian Gulf coast in the south of country. Th...
متن کاملCarbon sequestration in sugarcane plant and soil with different cultivation systems
Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a multi-purpose crop, mainly planted in South-western (SW) parts of Iran. However, the capability of sugarcane farms to sequestrate carbon into soil and plant is not well documented. In this research, the carbon sequestration in sugarcane plant and soil in a ratooning traditional cultivation system at the Amirkabir Sugarcane Agro-Industry Complex...
متن کاملModel Simulations of Carbon Sequestration in the North- west Pacific by Direct Injection
The direct disposal of CO2 into the ocean interior represents a possible means to help mitigate rising levels of atmospheric CO2. Here, we use three different versions of an ocean general circulation model (OGCM) to simulate the direct injection of liquid CO2 near Tokyo. Our results confirm that direct injection can sequester large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere when disposal is made at suf...
